We reached the LRT station near the coliseum at 7:40. I knew we weren’t late since the kind lady we met on the train helped us make our way to the coliseum itself. When we went inside, we even had time to buy our food: two slices of pizza, a medium-sized bucket of popcorn, a cup of root beer for me, and a cup of Pepsi for my grandmother.
We reached our seats. We were quite near to the stage, and I was thankful for that. Very. Much. Indeed. The show started with Somedaydream as the opening act. He sang three songs, among which I only knew one. He’s pretty great live, really. It makes me wish more that the producers haven’t autotuned his voice in Hey Daydreamer.
A couple of minutes after 8:30, the lights went out. We started to cheer. We knew it was time.
The setlist for the whole concert is as follows:
- Black Star - She came out with the green star. Ironic.
- What The Hell - This made the whole Araneta to release their energy a lot.
- Sk8er Boi - Hearing a song from her very first album for the first time in this concert has to be really special for all of her fans.
- He Wasn’t - This has to be my most favourite part in the whole concert because of what she did before she sang. She let us raise our hands up, then down, then up, then down, up, down, etc. Avril herself laughed with us. It was magnificent. Her commands and our hands were seriously in sync.
- I Always Get What I Want - This is one of the two videos that I haven’t taken a video of. Reason? I didn’t know the song. Besides, my arm grew tired!
- Alice - Just like the song, the whole crowd and the lights, which were green, have become mysterious as well. It’s the perfect ambiance. Also, I didn’t finish recording the whole song.
- When You’re Gone - The second and final song that I didn’t record. I was calling a good friend of mine because I promised her that I was gonna call her. She used to be an Avril fan, but I think she still likes her, just not as much. Anyway, it had been long before she answered her phone, and when she did, she asked me to just show her the video. Oh well. You know who you are. Hahaha. I’m not so certain if she’ll be able to read this post, though.
- Wish You Were Here - I so love this song, as well as the live version. I looked odd while recording this, though. On my left hand was the cellphone containing the landline SIM card, and on my right was my phone, taking a video of Avril Lavigne singing this wonderful song.
- Unwanted (instrumental), Freak Out (instrumental) going to Girlfriend - Those epic guitar solos were simply epic. Then Girlfriend came along. Of course the whole crowd became wild again while we sang our hearts out to she’s like, so whatever…
- Airplanes (chorus) to My Happy Ending - I wasn’t surprised when I heard Airplanes because I saw a video that was exactly like this. The only difference was, Avril’s voice sounded better when she sang these two songs in Araneta!
- Don’t Tell Me - If ever you come across my video of Don’t Tell Me, the slight scream in the beginning was me. I was surprised, yet kind of touched, because she sang this (although this song doesn’t apply to my life).
- Smile - I smiled. This song made me cheerful during the summer before third year, and it still does!
- I’m With You - Her performance of I’m With You has got to be my most favourite among all the others. It was so serene, so calm, so peaceful especially with the blue lights, everybody singing along, the instrumental made by her band, and Avril sitting on the bass drum of her drummer. It’s just so perfect.
- Push (instrumental) - I gotta say I didn’t recognize this. After the show, I kept on asking myself why she didn’t sing it, but apparently, they did (kind of)!
- I Love You - I have to admit. I expected something better than I Love You for her encore. Something like Everybody Hurts, or Push with the lyrics. But then again, I Love You isn’t so bad. Just different. Good different.
- Complicated - Thoroughly predictable, quite frankly. Of course she’ll sing her first ever single at the very last. Like they say, save the best for last. Right? Right?
Overall, The Black Star Tour is my favorite concert so far. Aesthetically, The Script’s has been much better with the background and the lights and everything. But when it comes to the impact and the amount of happiness that had filled my empty self (not so much that time because of what happened last Tuesday), Avril Ramona Lavigne’s concert is the one.
P.S. The concert had gone by so well that time that even my grandmother - yes, my 63 year old grandmother, enjoyed the show!
P.P.S. I still can’t believe that I’m taller than Avril Lavigne!
